Matemwe is a quintessential Swahili fishing village featuring an open fish market, filled with the freshest of fish to serve up in the privacy of Kandili Villa.
Its shore line is dispersed with traditional stone housing and ngalawa fishing boats bobbing in the crystal clear waters. You may even see clove farming and local women collecting seaweed along the shoreline. Matemwe is quieter a village than many in the north of the island and its people are extremely friendly and hospitable.
Nearby Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area remains one of Africa’s most beautiful and exclusive islands. It boasts an array of butterflies, nesting turtles, Africa’s most endangered forest duiker and a spectacular variety of marine life.
